The Babel and the Sphinx are among the best-known national symbols of our country. If you want to admire them up close, you can get here in just 13 minutes – by cable car. There is also the option of walking, but this is difficult and can be dangerous due to the presence of bears in the area. And if you’re with little ones, the cable car is even better. Set aside a whole day for this experience, especially if you want to do the full route: Bușteni – Babele – Peștera. Babele - Peștera - The "Bucegi Tunnel" route

After enjoying the scenery from 2292 meters above sea level and admiring the Sphinx and the Babele, you can take the cable car to another special tourist attraction in the area – the Ialomiței Cave. You take the Babele – Peștera gondola from the same place where the Bușteni – Babele gondola left you. It also runs every 30 minutes. We recommend that you get off around 13:00, so that you have time to visit the Ialomiței Cave and catch the last cable car back to Babele at 16:30. The route with this gondola is a shorter 2611 meters, with a difference in level of 560 meters on the descent. You’ll take a 10-minute ride on the cable car, from where you have a 20-minute walk to the cave. We recommend you calculate your time well, as you need at least an hour to visit the cave. To avoid being on the run, it’s best to leave Busteni in the morning, around 09:00 – 10:00. The whole route is impressive, with landscapes that transport you into a fairytale world of calm and tranquility.

The Bușteni – Babele – Peștera cable car route is also special because of the many sights you can admire. Here’s what we visited:

  • Babele

The gondola drops you right next to Babele, the famous natural monument of the Bucegi, with its rocky mushroom shapes. They are made of sandstone and conglomerates, eroded by wind, rain and freeze-thaw over a period of 2 million years.

  • Bucegi Sphinx

The Sphinx is located a few dozen meters from the Babele and attracts the eye with its anthropomorphic shape – like a human head. It is made of the same types of rock as the Babel, and has been eroded over 2 million years. At 8 meters high and 12 meters wide, it’s a megalith to which many legends are linked. Some even say Egypt’s Sphinx was named after it, not the other way around.

  • Monument to the Heroes of Caraiman

The most beautiful view in the area is right on the Caraiman Cross. The Babele – Monument walk is an hour one-way. But well worth the effort. The view over the Prahova Valley is so beautiful that you will hardly leave this place. The Monument is 39.3 m, and was erected between 1924 -1928, in memory of the more than 30,000 soldiers who fell defending these passes during the First World War.

  • Ialomita Cave

You can get here by the Babele – Peștera cable car, then walk for 20 minutes. The Ialomița Cave is at an altitude of over 1600 meters above sea level and measures 1,128 meters, of which about 450 meters are visitable. You need at least an hour to enjoy all it has to offer. There are numerous galleries and caves as well as an underground river. There is also a hermitage, originally built in the 16th century, at the cave entrance. To enjoy all this, the best idea is to take the cable car. This gives you time to admire all the natural beauty that the Buceg has to offer.
